Over time, gambling costs money. That is not a warning about bad luck, it is how the industry pays for itself. This page is the practical version of that: where to get free help, how to lock yourself out, and the limits worth setting before you play again.

Most responsible gambling pages exist because a regulator requires one. They tend to be a paragraph of boilerplate and a logo. This one is written to be used, so the phone numbers come first, and the explanation comes after.
We should also be straight about our position. 10OnlineCasinos earns commission when readers sign up through links on some of our pages, which means we make money from an activity that costs our readers money. That conflict is real, and it cannot be disclaimed away. What we can do is publish our methods, refuse to rank operators we cannot verify, print the findings that embarrass operators we earn from, and make this page genuinely useful rather than decorative. There is no affiliate link anywhere on it.
Self-Exclusion: Locking Yourself Out Properly
Closing an account is not self-exclusion. Closing an account is reversible in about ninety seconds, and operators are permitted to market to you afterwards. Self-exclusion is a formal instruction that licensed operators must refuse your business, and the national schemes apply it everywhere at once instead of site by site.
National Gambling Self-Exclusion Schemes by Country
| Where | Scheme | What it covers |
| Australia | BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register (betstop.gov.au) | Every licensed online and phone wagering service in Australia, in one step. Free. Choose from three months to lifetime |
| Great Britain | GAMSTOP | All operators licensed in Great Britain for online gambling. Free. Six months, one year or five years |
| Armenia | Statutory register of persons barred from gambling | Maintained through the national monitoring operator; registration at the National Centre for Addiction Treatment is one route on to it |
| Uganda | Operator-level, mandated by the regulator | The Responsible Gaming Directives 2025 require licensed operators to enforce self-exclusion, close accounts, refund balances and stop marketing. There is no single national register, so you must request it from each operator |
| Kenya | Operator-level | Requested from each operator individually. Ask for it in writing and keep the reply |
| Canada | Provincial | Run by each province’s regulator or lottery corporation, so coverage stops at the provincial border |
| New Zealand | Operator and venue-level | Available through operators and venues; the Gambling Helpline can walk you through it |
To register with BetStop, you need a mobile number, an email address, and either an Australian driver’s licence or a Medicare card. It takes a few minutes, and it is free.
Choose a Longer Period Than Feels Comfortable
Self-exclusion normally cannot be shortened once it has started, and that is the feature rather than the flaw. The version of you that signs up is not the version who will want out in three weeks. People who pick the shortest available option frequently return; the minimum exists for regulatory reasons, not as a recommendation.
Blocking Software and Bank Card Blocks
A self-exclusion register only reaches operators inside its own licensing regime. Offshore and unlicensed sites are not in it, which is exactly where someone looking for a way around a register ends up. Two further layers close most of that gap.
Device blocking
Blocking software sits on your phone and computer and refuses to open gambling sites and apps, including ones no register covers.
- BetBlocker (betblocker.org) is free, run by a charity, and has been going since 2013. It covers multiple devices and lets you set restricted periods you cannot lift early. If cost is a factor at all, start here.
- Gamban blocks gambling sites and apps across devices on a paid subscription of a couple of pounds a month, and is provided free to people in Great Britain through GamCare, the National Gambling Support Network and most NHS gambling clinics.
In Great Britain, TalkBanStop combines all three layers deliberately: GamCare for support, GAMSTOP for self-exclusion, Gamban for blocking. It is funded by the Gambling Commission, and the reason it bundles them is that any one layer alone is easy to step around.
Bank and card blocks
Many banks can decline gambling transactions on your card at the point of payment, which catches deposits that slip past everything else. Monzo and Starling in the UK both offer this in-app, with a cooling-off delay before the block can be switched off again, so a late-night decision cannot be undone the same night. Plenty of other banks and card issuers now offer something similar without advertising it, so it is worth asking yours directly.
One caveat worth knowing: card-level blocks work on transactions coded as gambling. A deposit routed through an e-wallet or a mobile money paybill may not carry that code, and can go through anyway.
The Limits Worth Setting Today
If you are going to keep gambling, these are the settings that change outcomes. Set them while you are calm, because their whole function is to bind you at a moment when you are not.
| Tool | What it does | Why it matters |
| Deposit limit | Caps what you can pay in per day, week or month | The single most effective control, because it binds before the money is at risk rather than after |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Harder to fool yourself with than a deposit limit, since recycled winnings still count |
| Session or time limit | Ends a session after a set duration | Time distortion is a documented feature of continuous products like slots |
| Reality check | Interrupts play with elapsed time and net position | Breaks the trance state that long sessions produce |
| Cool-off or time-out | Locks the account for hours, days or weeks | The right tool for a bad night. Use it instead of a bigger bet |
| Self-exclusion | Formal, long-term, hard to reverse | The right tool when limits have stopped holding |
Two practical notes. An increase to a limit should never take effect immediately, and on a well-run site it does not: reductions apply at once, increases wait out a cooling-off period. If an operator raises your deposit limit the instant you ask, that tells you something about the operator. And if the limit tools are hard to find, that is also a finding, which is why we check for them in our reviews.
Warning Signs
The useful signs are about behaviour rather than amounts. Someone on a high income can be in serious trouble while someone staking small amounts is fine. Money is the symptom, not the measure.
- Betting more than you intended to, repeatedly, despite deciding otherwise beforehand.
- Gambling to recover losses, which is the single most reliable predictor of harm.
- Borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for bills or rent.
- Lying about how much you gamble, or hiding it from people close to you.
- Gambling to escape stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood, rather than for entertainment.
- Irritability or restlessness when you try to cut down.
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy, or withdrawing from people.
- Thinking about gambling when you are doing something else.
Clinicians use validated screening tools for this, and a helpline or a GP can take you through one properly. We are not going to publish a scored quiz, because a number generated by a review site is not an assessment. If several of the above are familiar, that is reason enough to talk to someone, and a first call is a conversation rather than a commitment to anything.
If Things Have Got Very Dark: Gambling harm carries a real risk of suicidal thoughts, and financial crisis is one of the situations most strongly associated with them. If you are having those thoughts, please treat it as urgent: contact your local emergency number, or a crisis line in your country through findahelpline.com. Gambling debt is survivable and recoverable. Please talk to somebody today.
How Gambling Actually Works
Understanding the mechanism is protective, so here it is without decoration.
Every commercial gambling product carries a built-in margin in the operator’s favour. On a slot, it is expressed as return to player: a game advertised at 96% RTP is designed to retain about 4% of everything staked through it over the long run. In a sportsbook, the margin is baked into the odds, so a market where two outcomes are genuinely even money will be priced slightly below that on both sides. Neither is cheating. It is the business model, and it is disclosed.
The part that misleads people is the phrase long run. RTP is an average over an enormous number of plays, not a description of your session or your month. It does not mean you get 96% of your money back tonight, and it does not mean a game is due to pay out because it has not recently. Each spin is independent of the last.
Two consequences follow. Total amount staked matters more than net position, because the margin applies to turnover: recycling the same 100 through a game twenty times exposes you to the edge twenty times over. And the more continuous a product is, the more of the edge it can collect per hour, which is why slots, crash games and in-play betting cause disproportionate harm compared with a weekly accumulator.
Anything sold to you as beating this, whether a staking system, a tipster subscription, a bot or a strategy, is being sold. If it worked, it would not need customers.
Five Myths That Cost People Money
| The belief | What is actually true |
| “I am due a win; it has been cold all night” | Slots and roulette have no memory. Past results do not change the next outcome, and the machine does not know what it owes you |
| “I can win it back” | Chasing losses means staking more while distressed, which is when people bet worst. It is the behaviour most strongly linked to serious harm |
| “I nearly won, so I am getting closer” | Near misses are a design feature. They activate the same response as a win while taking your money, and they are engineered deliberately |
| “I know football, so betting on it is skill” | Knowledge helps you find value only against a bookmaker’s margin and its own modelling. Confidence in a subject reliably makes people bet more, not better |
| “A bonus means I am playing with their money” | Bonus funds carry wagering requirements, maximum cashouts and maximum bet rules. Whether the multiplier applies to the bonus alone or to your deposit as well can double the obligation. See how wagering requirements work |
If You Are Worried About Someone Else
You can call every helpline on this page yourself, without the person gambling being involved or knowing. Affected family members and friends are part of who these services exist for, and many of them are the reason people eventually get help.
- Pick a calm moment rather than the aftermath of a loss, when defensiveness is highest.
- Talk about behaviour and its effects, not about the amounts. “You have seemed distant, and I am worried” travels much further than an accounting exercise.
- Expect it to take more than one conversation. Denial is a feature of the problem, not a sign you handled it badly.
- Do not clear gambling debts directly. Paying off a balance while nothing else has changed very often funds the next round of gambling. Help them get to a debt adviser instead.
- Do protect shared money: separate accounts, remove authority on joint cards, and check whether your name sits on any borrowing.
- Look after yourself too. Living with someone else’s gambling is its own harm, and it is a legitimate reason to seek support on your own account.
Money and Debt
Gambling debt feels different from other debt because of the shame attached to it. Mechanically, it is the same thing, and the same help applies.
Free, independent debt advice exists in most countries and is worth reaching out before a crisis rather than after. A debt adviser can deal with creditors on your behalf, and gambling as a cause does not disqualify you from any of the ordinary remedies. Whoever you speak to, be honest about the cause, because the advice changes if the borrowing is ongoing.
One warning specific to this situation. People whose gambling accounts have been closed or frozen are actively targeted by recovery fraud: an approach by message or social media, an offer to recover your losses or your balance, and a fee, a verification deposit or your card or wallet PIN requested up front. It is a scam every time. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to be paid, and no genuine process needs your PIN.
Legal Gambling Age by Market
This varies more than most people assume, and an app store rating or an overseas review is not a source for it.
| Market | Minimum age |
| Australia | 18 |
| Great Britain | 18 |
| New Zealand | 18 |
| Kenya | 18 |
| Canada | 19 in most provinces; 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec |
| Armenia | 21 for betting and casino games; 18 for lotteries |
| Uganda | 25 |
| Indonesia | Gambling is prohibited; no age permits it |
Gambling is an adult activity, and nothing on this site is intended for anyone below the age that applies where they are. If children use your devices, the blocking tools above cover that too, and parental controls at the operating system level are worth setting alongside them.
What We Do, and What We Will Not Do
A responsible gambling page from a commercial site is worth very little unless it says what the publisher has actually committed to. Ours is checkable against our published scoring rubric and our editorial policy.
Our commitments
- We do not rank an operator whose licence we cannot verify with a regulator.
- We do not publish a payout time, a bonus term or a test result we did not obtain. Where a test has not been run, we say so instead of estimating.
- We never describe a bonus without naming its wagering model, because a multiplier alone is not information.
- Commission rates are not an input to any ranking, and an operator cannot pay to move up.
- We publish negative findings about operators we earn commission from.
- We check for deposit limits, cool-off and self-exclusion when we review a site, and we report their absence.
- We do not use countdown timers, urgency language, or any framing that presents gambling as income.
- We do not target markets where gambling advertising is unlawful, and we carry no affiliate link on this page or on any page about an operator we cannot verify.
FAQs: Responsible Gambling
How do I stop myself gambling online?
Use a national self-exclusion register rather than closing accounts one at a time. BetStop covers every licensed online and phone wagering service in Australia in one step; GAMSTOP does the same across operators licensed in Great Britain.
Add free blocking software such as BetBlocker, so unlicensed sites the register cannot reach are blocked on your devices. Then ask your bank about a gambling block on your card.
Any single layer can be worked around by someone determined enough. Using all three is the point: each adds friction at a different moment.
Is there a free gambling helpline?
Yes, in many countries. Australia: National Gambling Helpline 1800 858 858, free, 24/7. Great Britain: National Gambling Helpline 0808 8020 133, run by GamCare, free, 24/7 by phone or live chat. New Zealand: Gambling Helpline 0800 654 655, or text 8006. Ontario: ConnexOntario 1-866-531-2600.
If your country is not listed, findahelpline.com is a vetted directory covering more than 130 countries.
What is self-exclusion, and how long does it last?
It is a formal instruction that licensed operators must refuse to let you gamble. A national register applies it across every licensed operator at once instead of site by site.
On BetStop, you choose from three months up to a lifetime, and it is free, requiring a mobile number, an email address and either an Australian driver’s licence or a Medicare card. GAMSTOP offers six months, one year or five years.
Once started, a period generally cannot be shortened. That is deliberate, and it is what makes it work.
What are the warning signs of a gambling problem?
Behavioural rather than financial: betting more than you planned, gambling to win back losses, borrowing or selling things to fund it, lying about how much you gamble, gambling to escape stress or low mood, irritability when you try to stop, and losing interest in things you used to enjoy.
Money is a symptom rather than the measure – someone on a high income can be in serious difficulty. If several of these are familiar, a helpline is a conversation, not a commitment.
Can gambling be profitable in the long run?
No. Commercial gambling products carry a mathematical margin in the operator’s favour, which is how the industry funds itself. A slot at 96% return to player is designed to keep about 4% of everything staked through it; a bookmaker’s margin sits inside the odds.
Return to player is a long-run average across enormous numbers of plays, so it says nothing about your session. Any system, tipster or bot sold as beating this is being sold to you for a reason.
What is the legal gambling age?
18 in Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand and Kenya. 19 in most Canadian provinces, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. 21 in Armenia for betting and casino games, 18 for lotteries. 25 in Uganda, among the highest anywhere. In Indonesia, gambling is prohibited, so no age permits it.
Never rely on an app store rating or an overseas review for this.
How do I help someone who is gambling too much?
Talk about the behaviour and its effects rather than the money, pick a calm moment rather than the aftermath of a loss, and expect more than one conversation.
Do not pay off gambling debts directly – clearing a balance while nothing else changes usually funds more gambling. Do protect shared finances, and do get support for yourself: helplines serve affected family and friends too, and you can call without the other person’s involvement.
Does 10OnlineCasinos profit from gambling?
Yes, and you should weigh that when reading us. We earn commission when readers sign up through links on some of our pages.
That is why we publish our rubric and its weights, state that commission is not a ranking input, decline to rank operators whose licences we cannot verify, and publish negative findings about operators we earn from. This page carries no affiliate link.
